#CollegeChat Transcript: How to Evaluate Colleges Financially with Lynn O’Shaughnessy

Last night, Lynn O’Shaughnessy, a bestselling author and higher education journalist, shared  advice from her newly published book The College Solution: A Guide for Everyone Looking for the Right School at the Right Price (2nd Edition) during #CollegeChat on Twitter.

We had an interesting discussion revolving around how to find the right school at the right price. We covered the following topics:

  • What are the biggest sources of college money.
  • How can you increase your chances of qualifying for merit scholarships.
  • How can you evaluate the generosity of a school before applying.
  • Where to find the best online tools to evaluate colleges.
  • What do families of divorce need to know about financial aid.
  • How to use net price calculators.

  1. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I used “Hootsuite” to track the chat that evening and apologize to hear if it didn’t accurately record all the tweets. It has been quite difficult to find a transcript service for a few months as the one I was using was acquired by another company and ceased operating.

I appreciate the work high school counselors do and understand you have many responsibilities not just providing college advice. I think parents, students and others do not understand your workload. I also suspect — to many parents including me with my first child– relied to heavily on high school counselors and don’t get more involved and educate ourselves better to be a bigger help to our kids.

If you have a suggestion for a topic on “CollegeChat” or a guest to propose I would love to hear from you.

    Interesting.
    Not all comments included though.
Still not happy at the lamblasting of high shcool counselors in general but understandable given the perspectives demonstrated by participants.
A good number of high school counselors DO know about college admissions and financial aid. They have people they can call at institutions to clarify any concerns raised. I do.
They attend seminars and webinars for college admissions updates adn financial aid updates given by the Feds and institutions. I do.
There are high school counselors who DO visit colleges and universities to get a feel for the campus and interact witih aadmissions and financial aid offices. I do.
The real reason I do nto accept the generalizations made in the conversations are – take any other group of people or identities and substitute where ever you see those lamblasting comments. That is acceptable in our world and it should nto be acceptable in yours either.
